The Society of New Icelanders was founded in 1991 in Reykjavik. Our aim is to help foreigners adjust to life in Iceland and for Icelanders to get to know people of foreign descent living here in Iceland. Over the last 17 years the function of SONI has changed dramatically. Originally it held lectures about health, education and social services etc as well as social events. Since the Intercultural Centre opened in Reykjavik and took responsibility for such educational programes SONI became more involved with social and cultural events. As more and more foreigners came to live in Reykjavik there became a better network for foreigners via the Intercultural Open House and various clubs and societies for people from various nations. SONI helped to hold an International festival in the town of Akranes in November 2007. During this time it was found that there was a lack of services and facilites for people of foreign descent in Vesturlands. Since early 2008 SONI has moved it's base to Akranes to help fill this need for social and cultural sharing. For some years we ran a web site newicelanders.com (please check it out) but we have been unable to update this for some years now. Hopefully we will be able to reach out to the public via this new blog. You may also wish to subscribe to our free email list new-icelanders@yahoogroups.com with which we give out our newsletters and other such information that might be of interest to our members. We hope to publish in various languages on this blog as often as possible. For now we have translaters for Icelandic and Polish.
